Tigh Na Cloich sits on an elevated site on a former Historic Lookout Point overlooking a Roman encampment on the banks of the river Tay in Pitlochry, and is the very essence of Pitlochry History.
The Hotel building occupies the site of a large rock which was removed by blasting when the original house was built in 1879.
The rock was known as the ‘Sentinel Stone’ and gave its name to Pitlochry.
The name of this essentially Victorian town Pitlochry is a corruption of the Gaelic: Pit-Cloich- Aire and means ‘Place by the sentinel stone’ and is believed to be associated with the pics 2000 years ago.
